Video Game

Right, I think this belongs here but I'm not sure.

Dr A has been mentioning the creation of a video game for quite some time. He first began when I was in the process of creating and presenting one at a school competition. We successfully placed second place at Nationals level which meant beating over 200 other games. In the end, our game was pretty horribly made. No idea how we placed but we did.

Anyway, my thoughts are that if myself and the rest of my team could make a horrible game like that. There is no reason we (The PA or whatever we call ourselves now) could do the same and do a job just as good or better.

Now, I've been taking a look at Fez along with playing it and I am all for a 2D platform game made with pixel art.

However, with all of this, there is a tricky aspect to it. Programming. I have recently been learning Java just for fun and quite honestly I'm stuck with it right now. (Can't get the program to exit if a certain button is pushed.) And I'm waiting for a teacher of mine to get back to me on that.
Also, I am working on Scratch and I'm learning that nicely. I have also completed my HTML programming course and I now know how to work with integration of Flash and Javascript. I also have full access to Unity and 3DS Max. I am also willing to work with the Unreal Game Engine or a 3D game engine using Java that I know of but can produce 2D. So those are the tools I have access to and can work with.

I also understand that Dr A is taking programming classes and he could very well be ahead of me in this department. So we should also look to him as the programmer. Also, if anyone else knows programming please let me know.

Also, I will be going over to University in about a year and I will be majoring in Computer Science. So that means a tonne of programming. So I will boost in skill greatly at that time.

Anyways, I digress. Basically, I want to know if people are interested in this. Much of the heavy work is the coding. (Btw listen to Code Monkey by Jonathan Coultan). However, graphics would be very important as well as people to provide input. So, who want's to do this?

Could you perhaps get me access to any of these tools so I can check them out, and start using them to begin creating our game?

If not, maybe sometime we could get together and do some screen sharing on skype, and we could work on it like that

I am all for this. I really believe we can make a game people would really enjoy. I think most of us have the same way of thinking and that there is a good thing. If there is anyway I can help, I'm in.

Sadly, I can't really screen share. But Unity is the program I'm looking at right now. I suggest you check that out. We can use JavaScript with it.

And Rabid, I think the main thing we need right now would be a concept for the game. Any ideas, anyone?

We could make a nice 8-Bit style fighter game. We could have a simple roster of 8 - 10 or so and it would be fun. We could implement PA/ K.T.P.T elements into it. Maybe add Zitz and maybe Sparkles for old time sake. I feel like this would be our best bet for a game because there aren't to many fighter games that are not the generic Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat games. If anyone else has ideas, I would love to hear them as well.

Not a bad idea. What we could do is take what you were mentioning about adding Zitz and Sparklez even further, and at least for now, take all of the board members avatars, perhaps based of the style you did recently, and make those the characters for people to choose to play as when they start the game.

I believe using the board members could be a good idea. But, I think we need to edit or change the style to make them seem like fighters.

I agree with Rabid, though this is sounding amazing and looking foward to getting more involved with this!

Very impressive! I've been cobbling a game together these past few days (just practising). It's 3D but still Pixely. I'll send out some screen shots later.

But 2D fighter style should be easy. The old hard part is colliders. But Rabid, if you could take those 3 characters and create various animations for all of them, that would be great!

OK, i'm currently working on the animations, but I thought I would post all the characters ATM. Some are not complete, but, I thought I would put them up anyways.

Characters i'm not in love with right now are Trigger and Zitz. ZItz is supposed to be a hovering wizard and Trigger is supposed to be a monkey-ish thing. I will fix these accordingly. Vivid still needs to be shaded.

Well everyone, this is my 100th post.

I thought I would try to make something special for it because you hit this milestone once. But, I would just like to step back and appreciate what you guys are doing. We are all working together and talking to others from around the world that share our same interests. I believe this is one amazing experience and we should all cherish it. I know many have walked away from PA or whatever we call it now, but I want to say I'm glad you guys have stayed. This probably sounds really stupid and sappy, but I mean it.

I really want everyone to continue doing what they are doing and stay updated here on the forums. We can work together well, so why not make a kick-ass game? I want everyone to comment back, please. Tell me and everyone else what you love about this group. Then, we can work on a game that will be totally awesome!

What I love about this group is how the members on here aren't just some random person. But someone who is in the same group as myself and I feel at home and feel comfortable, that sounds weird and awkward but it's my true opinion. This group is one of a kind and I am glad to be a part of it and the PA has really made my minecraft experience be special and enjoyable throughout the months that I have been here and I am really glad that all of you have stayed and now lets make a game!

Well I have really been tinkering with this Pixel Fight game idea and I thought you guys might want an example of what kind of "FIGHTER" I am talking about.
This is just a little piece I put together quickly, there are many problems with it and I would like some feedback.

I also have realized I am way to excited for this, I will get back to making animations now that I have fixed up all the character sprites. I will try to hold in ideas and not overwhelm anyone.

Ok, I've done some work and the basic menu is on the way.

But the layout is good Rabid. Some parts will be tricky to create but I'll try. Also, I need everyone to think up 4 moves for their character.

If i could help that would be an honur...i may suck at pixleing but i can make some nice soundtrack/background music for your game.

This looks a lot like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and the other smash bros. games, which are games I enjoy quite a bit

Zitz, right now i'm using linux on my computer, so I may not be able to use unity, as I cannot find a linux version. After you get your new internet, do you think you may be able to do some screen sharing on skype then?

Although later on today, I will be trying to download it, and see if I can get it to run, there is a program for linux that allows you to run windows programs, unfortunately the programs dont always work properly that way.

If you may have say from my builds on the building section on the forums I am more of a builder than I am a skinner/ pixelator. I'm not sure how to contribute to this game as I haven't been practicing on becoming better at shading etc. though at building. Not sure what to do cause as a board member I want to put forth my most possible and help out. Not the best at coding have worked on scratch before but not good at all. Any suggestions on what I can do or should to comment below?
